Having covered photography at a number of events at iconic venues across London, I’ve developed a routine for how I approach and prepare for an event.

Here are some essential tips I like to keep in mind:

1. Understand the Venue: Each venue has unique characteristics and traits. The selection of a venue often aligns with the ‘brand’ of the business or the theme of the event. Understanding the lighting, architecture, and layout early on is crucial. This helps with understanding how best to capture photographs and comprehending the event’s flow.
2. Timing: Timing is everything in photography. Capturing moments at the right time ensures that the essence of the event is preserved through the photographs. If there is a presentation, a speech, a performance, you can ensure you are in the right place at the right time.
3. Preparation: Preparing in advance can be incredibly helpful. Site visits to the venue are game-changers. Understanding the event schedule and ensuring you have the right equipment on hand is essential for successful event photography.
4. Engagement: During the event, engagement with attendees can sometimes be necessary. Understanding what the event is about and the event flow can help in capturing candid moments that tell a story long after the event has concluded.
5. Creativity: Each event and venue is unique. While some aspects may be consistent from event to event, applying lessons from previous events allows for a creative approach to photography. Exploring angles, lighting, composition, and mood can often make the photographs stand out. Getting there early on the day can help as well.

Backup plan…

Additionally, having a backup plan is crucial. Events can sometimes be unpredictable, so being prepared for unexpected changes can ensure that nothing is missed.

I’ve found that flexibility and adaptability are key traits to bear in mind with the responsibility of being an event photographer.

Having covered photography at numerous memorable locations across London, I’ve found that attention to detail from enquiry to delivery ensures that each significant moment is captured, telling the story well after the event.
